Biography
Prof. (Dr.) Debajyoty Banik, SMIEEE, MACM, is a distinguished academic leader and researcher with expertise in Natural Language Processing (NLP), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Machine Learning (ML). He currently serves as University Director of Research & Publications, Anurag University and Full Professor at Anurag University, Hyderabad, where he spearheads institutional research policy, governance, and global collaborations. With a Ph.D. in NLP from IIT Patna, M.Tech from NIT Durgapur, and a B.E. from IIEST Shibpur, Dr. Banik brings over 15 years of professional experience spanning academia, research, and industry. His leadership has consistently delivered measurable impact; including doubling Q1 publications and tripling Q1 submissions while fostering a transformative research culture across multiple universities. Dr. Banik’s research portfolio includes over 60 publications in top-tier venues such as IEEE Transactions, ACM Transactions, and other Q1 SCI-indexed journals, alongside 7 patents (including one granted). He has contributed to high-impact national projects/consultancy, notably with the Indian Army (Chinese language decoding and intelligence extraction) and the Supreme Court of India (machine-aided Hindi–English translation). He has received multiple awards for his outstanding research contributions, including Research Excellence Awards, Outstanding Presentation Awards, Best Paper Awards, and several others. Dr. Banik has taught a broad spectrum of core and advanced courses to B.Tech, M.Tech, and Ph.D. students, including Theory of Computation, Natural Language Processing, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Data Mining and Warehousing, Database Management Systems, Computer Organization, Object-Oriented Programming, and Operating Systems.
He is the founding chair of Anudhaban, an international research platform uniting researchers/academicians from Singapore, Jordan, the Netherlands, and India to advance the global research ecosystem. His initiatives such as Q1XTalk and Q1Xcellence bring together international faculty, industry experts, and institutional leaders to drive university level research excellence with culture transformation. Dr. Banik has also forged numerous industry collaborations to enhance research quality, secure logistical support, and provide training in cutting-edge domains. Notably, through his initiative, NVIDIA supported the university events by providing GPUs, delivering NLP/AI specialized training, evaluating faculty performance, and awarding certificates based on their achievements. His efforts, from strategic initiation to operational implementation, in organizing international FDPs with industry and global support have been exemplary. These programs have benefited not only faculty from our own university but also professors and researchers from institutions across India, as well as industry professionals, by providing cutting-edge, hands-on learning experiences from global leaders. His contributions to research excellence and academic leadership have been covered by over two dozen prominent state and national outlets, showcasing the societal impact of his work and his role in advancing higher education. Under his leadership, the university achieved record growth in publications and established eight global collaborations. Through the Anudhaban initiative, he has brought together all 17 departments, faculty from multiple campuses, and experts from four countries, uniting over 500 faculty members. He is currently providing strategic research guidance to 500 university faculty members, directly mentoring around 100 students and researchers, and indirectly influencing the research of over 1,400 others..
Dr. Banik has delivered invited talks at IITs, government organizations, and international forums, and has supervised doctoral, M.Tech, and B.Tech scholars. His collaborations span reputed institutions worldwide, including Cardiff Metropolitan University (UK), University of Warwick (UK), VSB Technical University (Czech Republic), and the Mexican Academy of Sciences. Through his initiatives, world-renowned researchers and professors from globally reputed institutions including IIT Patna, NIT Jamshedpur, IIIT Hyderabad, the University of Dubai, the Federal Armed Forces University (Germany), Yarmouk University (Jordan), the Nanyang Technological University (NTU), National University of Singapore (NUS), and several others have collaborated with the university and delivered insightful expert talks. A visionary in research and governance leadership, Dr. Banik’s expertise encompasses NAAC/NBA accreditation strategy, policy-making, budget optimization, industry–academia partnerships, talent identification, faculty development, incentive initiative and rigorous follow-up, and the establishment of interdisciplinary research centers. His mission is to position institutions as globally recognized hubs of research, innovation, and societal impact.
